Summer 2023 LIP Cohort

Congrats to the Graduates!

On Friday, August 11, 2023, five talented artists completed the Leadership Initiative Project, each presenting a ten-minute first rehearsal speech for a theoretical production of their choosing, followed by a Q&A. Watch the recording of the final presentation event below!

Meet the Summer 2023 Cohort!

  • Dawn-Elin Fraser (she/her) is Head of Voice and Speech in NYU/Tisch’s New Studio on Broadway. Recent credits as voice/speech/dialect/text coach include: Broadway: Parade; & Juliet; 1776; Macbeth; Off-Broadway: Richard III; Merry Wives (The Delacorte); Shadow/LAND; Fat Ham; SUFFS (The Public Theater). How to Defend Yourself; (NYTW); Twilight Los Angeles; Fires in the Mirror (Signature Theater); She is the North American Dialect Coach for Hamilton and Director of the Coaches of Color Initiative. MFA, American Conservatory Theater.

  • Courtney Liu (she/her, MFA, RYT-200) is an Assistant Professor of Music Theatre at Elon University. Courtney has performed with the Phantom of the Opera (Broadway Cast), Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Queen of the Night, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Peridance Contemporary Dance Company, and the Cincinnati Ballet. Courtney’s choreography has been commissioned by Duke University, the Ciompi Quartet, Barriskill Dance Theatre School, and the American Dance Festival in collaboration with the Nasher Museum.

  • Cassandra R. McKay (she/her) is a television/radio personality, writer, and CEO of a nonprofit in Delaware. She has written, produced and directed community productions: The Great Shepherd, Through Mary’s Eyes, Hidden Figures, They Called her Moses, The Gift, What Lies Beneath, Stereotypes and Colorism, I Know Who I Am, I am Like My Father, and The Assignment. Most recently, she is writing I Do, I Did, I Don’t and When the Church Doors Close.

  • Ryan Brooke Taylor (he/him) of Baltimore Md. was most recently seen Off Broadway at the Chain Theater in What Passes for Comedy by G.D Kimble and Graceland Too by Nicole Hughes at the New York Theater Festival. On Broadway Mr. Taylor has appeared as a featured performer in the Lion King (Disney Theatrical Productions). Additional Off–Broadway credits include Lawn People (Cherry Lane Theater) and the title role in The Alchemist (Re:Verse Theater Co.). Regional Theater: Arkansas Rep and Pittsburgh Shakes festival. Mr. Taylor attended the Actor’s Center Conservatory, the Actor Training program at The Public Theater and is a member of the Deborah Hedwall Studio.

  • Vicki Whooper (she/her) is an educator, scholar, stage manager and arts enthusiast from Chicago, IL. Vicki’s work centers around uplifting the voices of the global majority and reframing the way we approach stage management. Vicki has participated on various panels with The Year of the Stage Manager 2020 and The Stage Manager’s Association. Vicki also held a year-long residency with the Hangar Theatre as a member of their EDI Committee assisting in the creation of new theatre policy around hiring practices, season selection, and community engagement in Ithaca, New York.

 LIP FAQs

  • LIP is a live, eight-week, online workshop for professional theatre artists interested in becoming directors.

  • LIP is for theatre artists with at least 10 years of professional experience interested in adding “director” to the list of things they can do. LIP Fellows have been actors, choreographers, stage managers, voice/speech coaches, and everything in between!

  • The Upstarts traditionally lead one or two LIP workshops annually. A few weeks before accepting our new cohort, we send out a call for application. Join our mailing list to find out when we’re accepting our next LIP cohort!

  • We pay you to participate in LIP! That’s right because of the extraordinary generosity of our donors, we pay each LIP Fellow to take the eight-week workshop. LIP Honorariums are currently $400.
