Fuente Ovejuna is considered the masterpiece of Lope de Vega, a Spanish poet and dramatist who lived around the same time as William Shakespeare, and who is considered second only to Cervantes in Spanish literature.  Despite this reverence, his work (as with most Spanish Golden Age literature) is largely unknown in the English-speaking world.

Cusi Cram's adaptation is full of joy and humor, and a great appreciation of food and wine, just like every Upstart Creatures event!

Fuente Ovejuna tells the story of a town that rebels against brutal suppression by its lord. Based on a real-life incident, the play has been embraced by various political groups throughout history, using the rallying cry “todos a una como Fuente Ovejuna” to support democratic, socialist, or communist causes.
